Government College University Lahore is one of the oldest colleges in Pakistan as well as one of the oldest higher education institution of Muslim world. Government College Lahore was established in 1864, then it was affiliated with Calcutta University of India. Government College was declared as degree awarding institute in 1997. Government College elevated to University in 2002. Government College University is a public sector university of Pakistan, chartered by Government of Punjab and recognized by Higher Education Commission of Pakistan.This Institution is one of the oldest seats of learning in the Muslim world. As a seat of higher learning GC University blends grand old traditions and modern educational standards to meet the ideals set by persons like Dr. Leitner, philosopher the poet, Dr. Muhammad Iqbal and the Noble Laureate, Dr. Abdus Salam.
GC University, Lahore has played a truly pioneering role in promoting research and inquiry in the country, particularly in the disciplines of physical and biological sciences. The university has a reputation of academic excellence based on an impressive record of achievement in teaching and research. The research carried out by GCU scholars in various departments has been acknowledged internationally. The University has produced two Nobel Laureates: Dr. Hargobind Khorana (in the field of Chemistry) and Dr. Abdul Salam (in the field of Physics).
All departments are well equipped with the necessary equipments/instruments required for research work. For example Center for advanced Studies in Physics (CASP) has the latest labs, including Laser lab, Material lab, Accelerator lab, Nano Technology lab, Plasma Focus lab, and Computer labs. Internet facility, multimedia, overhead projectors, a vast collection of books, journals, professional periodicals and digital library, research labs and seminar rooms are available in various departments to enhance the productivity of our young scholars by providing them an academically rich environment.
The Department of Computer Science, Government College University Lahore was established in 1999 as an independent Department in the postgraduate block of the GC University. At present, the Computer Science Department has 4 Computer Labs vis-à-vis postgraduate lab, main lab, general lab and ICS lab, and these labs comprising of more than 230 computers.The Department of Computer Science (DCS) is home to a vibrant and talented community of academics, researchers and students. Driven by research expertise and supported by excellent facilities, the undergraduate and postgraduate programs help students to develop their academic abilities and the essential skills required for the workplace such as evidence-based analysis, decision-making, problem-solving and project management skills.
